Makhana (Euryale ferox, Salisb, qian shi) ia a specie of NYMPHAEACEAE ,family.It is known as fox nut Kenjitsu,Komsil, Hin sat, Qian shi, Ji tou, Ji tou shi, Tao Quin shi, Su quin, ji tou mi and prickly lily seed in different parts of the world. It is an aquatic produce harvested from the ditches ,land depressions and ponds etc without any use of fertilizers and pesticides hence it is called ORGANIC herbal food naturally . Makhana( fox nut) plant does not have stem. It has large round leaves and produces bright purple flowers. The whole plant is covered with small thorns( kanta). The leaves of makhana plant have green upper surface and purple shaded lower surface. This plant produces fruits which are about the size of a small orange.Each fruits contains 8-10 seeds which are of pea size.

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION

For Geographic reason North Bihar in India is the heaven for Makhana production . Around 85 – 90% of the total makhana comes from Bihar’s wetlands . Although it is grown in Korea ,Japan ,Russia and Hunan, Anhui , Shantong and Jiangsu province of Peoples Republic of China.

MAKHANA PROPERTY

Makhana is superior to dryfruits such as almonds ,walnut , coconut and cashew nut in term of sugar ,protein and ascorbic acid and Phenol content. It is even superior to many Plant and animal based diets,’It has enough herbal medicinal properties hence the American Herbal Products Association has given Makhana (Qian shi) seed a class 1 (A one) rating.
